How to Distinguish The Different Type of Dog Allergies
Unbeknownst to a number of people, dogs are incredibly sensitive creatures with susceptibilities to a number of chronic ailments, allergies, and bacteria.
Allergens from pollen to carpet fibers to detergents can cause an outbreak in a dog, leading to redness, soreness, hair-loss, even infections. It’s important to understand and distinguish the various symptoms in dog allergies, because recognition and owner-prescribed treatment – or the corollary, a needlessly large bill from the veterinarian – depends entirely upon one’s ability to make the distinctions.
Below you’ll find a list that chronicles the distinctions under each of their respective dog allergies:
1. Atopic, airborne, or inhalant allergies
These dog allergies typically arise between August and September. The effects of these allergens present themselves as hypersensitivities, and dogs will often react by chewing their feet, licking their flanks, wheezing, or rolling in dirt or on carpet. Inflammation of the ears and scabbing on or around the nose may be present as well.
2. Contact dermatitis/allergies
Carpet fibers, household cleaners, and plastic are the usual suspects found to cause contact dermatitis, which usually yields red blisters and itchy bumps on bare skin; intense scratching episodes; and hair-loss.
3. Flea allergies
The saliva present in flea-bites reacts with canine skin, instigating a dog’s tendencies to itch, scratch, and bite. Hair-loss and pinkish, reddened or inflamed skin result from these destructive tendencies, making this dog allergy a notorious one. Easier to spot: the tiny black flecks inhabiting The Dog’s skin or pouncing around the environment.
A variety of food ingredients and combinations may react poorly with environmental triggers, yielding dog allergies that correspond with some of the following symptoms: itching of the face, feet, trunk, or anal areas; ear infections or other problems, sometimes yeast-related; and general redness or soreness of the skin following seemingly successful antibiotic treatments.
5. Other allergies
Other, much rarer but no less disruptive and irritating reactions to dog allergies include urticaria, or hives; angioedema, which appears as the swelling of a dog’s face; and anaphylaxis. The latter is a much rarer, life-threatening reaction by the dog to a substance ingested or injected. Angioedema, as such, deserves immediate attention; it can cause shock, cardiac and respiratory failure, and death.
Keeping this list handy can prevent expensive trips to the veterinarian, but as with anything, make sure to consult a licensed professional if the allergic reaction is suspicious or doesn’t lend itself to an easy explanation.
